Chief Justice Roberts Perspective of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Courts

The current Supreme Court holds nine judges. One chief justice and eight associate justices. John Roberts, Chief Justice of the United States, is concerned about artificial intelligence (AI) in courtrooms. With the new year of 2024 officially reigning, AI is the subject thats got all the spotlight, especially from the Supreme Court.

Artificial intelligence and ChatGPT are the main topics of discussion. ChatGPT is a product of AI generated by the company OpenAI. In 2015, a group of intellectual individuals, including Elon Musk, came together with different ideas, hence, the creation of ChatGPT. An early version of ChatGPT was established in November of 2022 and immediately went viral with its extraordinary capabilities. As time went on, AI and ChatGPT’s ethics started to become questioned, even more so after Trumps' ex-lawyer, Andy Cohen, had created ‘AI-generated’ legal citations for former U.S. President Donald Trumps business fraud trial.

Ultimately, the current state of AI and ChatGPT is deemed helpful with usage for the benefit of all humanity. Despite concerns from society, that AI might replace humans and their occupations with technology, Chief Justice Roberts doesn’t see it happening at all in the near future. However, he does predict that may cause a great deal of problems in the working environment for many, especially the legal environment.
